Theology According to Pink (the singer not the color)
It has been a while since I have posted a blog or blogged a post, not really sure which way that goes. I have several pastor friends who are very technologically adept. Me? Not so much. My blog is inspired by a blog that I read by “just a Jesus follower”. Her blog challenged me to listen to a song titled “what about us” by Pink. Yeah I know pink is a color but I couldn’t pick it out. (Inside joke) Pink is a female singer whose genre would not be categorized as Christian. (I only listened for research purposes) The theme is searching for answers in this world of chaos, confusion, hurts, and overall mayhem. The lyrics of the song asks the questions that many of us have asked on this journey called life
Listening to Pink sing “what about us” I hear the desperation, disappointments, unfulfilled dreams, and hopelessness. Desperation, disappointment, unfilled dreams and hopelessness appears to be the soundtrack of so many people today. No hope! No Joy! The results of chasing the elusive American dream which can never be caught. The American Dream does not sound like a destructive ideology however... Chasing the wind will keep us very busy but it will never accomplish anything other than dog-tired, overburdened, discontent, and joyless life. What I hear in the words are not questions to God but questions to the great deceiver, Satan. Why has your promised good life resulted in more problems rather than final answers, where is my happy ever after, why have these great plans that you had ended in disaster. Listening to the song and writing these words makes my heart heavy not for me but for our nation of hopeless generations.
In my crazy way of thinking I imagine God hears the chorus “what about us” He speaks and says here I am. I love you unconditionally. I AM the one who keeps my promises, I AM the one who comforts in the midst of broken dreams, I AM the one and only happy ever after, the genuine good life is forever. I do not make empty promises; I do not give false assurance. My love is not conditional on what you can do for me…it is simply “I LOVE YOU” and here is what I have done for you. God moves his view from the lost in the world to the church; in a very low voice speaking only to Himself: “I AM sorry that my children have not introduced us. I AM sorry that they are selfish with my love, as if there is a limited supply. If they only saw your hurt, your desperation, your hopelessness through my eyes like I saw their’s. They would come running to you with arms open wide, with words of hope and love, with compassion not condemnation. Then you would know my answer to the question: WHAT ABOUT US?
Church (all the body of believers) we complain about the condition of our world. We declare these are the end times. We say things like God cannot tarry much longer, come quickly Lord Jesus. There are lost and hopeless people all around us and they are screaming WHAT ABOUT US! Do we really believe what we profess? If so we should be asking ourselves WHAT ABOUT THEM the hopeless, the unloved, the hurting, and the desperate! Church we must realize we were like them once and someone introduced to our heavenly Father. It is time to pay it forward. We must ask ourselves WHAT ABOUT THEM?!?
